Our Organic First Flush Uji Matcha is directly sourced from Uji, Kyoto, one of Japan’s oldest and most celebrated tea regions. Crafted from a carefully balanced blend of Yabukita, Okumidori, Meiryoku, and Kanayamidori cultivars, this matcha brings together rich umami, fresh vegetal notes, and a gentle touch of astringency.

This results in a refined, full-bodied matcha with a smooth finish and a true sense of place. Enjoy it simply whisked with water to experience the distinctive character of first-harvest tea from Uji.

Traditionally, first flush leaves were reserved for high-grade matcha. Matcha made from these leaves is layered, umami-forward, and naturally smooth. It is best enjoyed on its own, whisked simply with water, allowing the character of the tea to shine without milk or sweeteners.

Tea cultivation in Uji dates back to the early 13th century, and the region became renowned for its exceptional growing conditions, skilled tea makers, and deep connection to Japanese tea culture. The region is often referred to as the birthplace of Japanese-style matcha, which is unique for its use of shaded tea leaves. The leaves are processed into tencha, which is aged before grinding into matcha. Today, Uji remains especially celebrated for its matcha, with elegance, complexity, and a beautifully balanced umami.

Cultivar:

Yabukita  + Okumidori + Meiryoku + Kanayamidori

Yabukita (やぶきた) is the most widely grown cultivar, accounting for over 70% of Japan’s tea crops. It’s known for its balanced profile, fresh grassy notes, and strong umami.

Okumidori (おくみどり) is a late-budding, frost-resistant cultivar that creates a delicate umami and vegetal matcha.

Meiryoku (めいりょく) is known for its vibrant green colour, mellow sweetness, and smooth, rounded umami with very low astringency.

Kanayamidori (かなやみどり) is prized for its rich aroma, gentle vegetal notes, and balanced, lingering finish.
